What Is a Mini Excavator?
A mini excavator—also known as a compact excavator or micro excavator—is defined by its smaller size and lighter weight compared to full-sized machines. Typically weighing between 1 to 3 tons, these compact machines are about one-third (or even less) the size of standard excavators.
Thanks to their compact size and lightweight design, compact excavators offer unique advantages in both construction and landscaping. They can maneuver through tight spaces and narrow pathways with ease, often featuring minimal or even zero tail swing. With the right attachments—like trenchers, augers, and hydraulic breakers—operators can dig trenches, demolish concrete, clear brush, and more.
Main Components of a Compact Excavator
House
The house is the core of the micro excavator, containing the engine, operator’s cab, and hydraulic pump. It supplies the power needed for operation. Mounted on a swing bearing, the house can rotate a full 360 degrees while the undercarriage stays in place—providing exceptional maneuverability in tight construction sites or narrow roads.
Undercarriage
The undercarriage includes standard rubber excavator tracks wrapped around drive sprockets, rollers, and idlers that propel the machine. There are two types of undercarriage: fixed and retractable. Retractable undercarriages offer greater flexibility, making it easier to pass through tight indoor pathways or narrow work zones.
Workgroup
The workgroup includes the boom, arm, and various attachments such as augers, hydraulic breakers, and grapples. The boom may be either fixed or swing-type, with the swing boom typically powered by hydraulics.
Backfill Blade
Controlled hydraulically from the cab, the backfill blade is used for leveling, backfilling, or dozing. It can also help stabilize the excavator during operation. At AGT, our backfill blades offer adjustable height and angle to meet your job site’s specific needs.
Key Advantages of a Mini Excavator
- Compact size makes transport easy
- use different attachments to dig trenches, grab logs, crush roots, and more.
- perfect for small work sites.
- 4. affordable pricing and simpler maintenance help reduce your total cost of ownership.
Buy or Rent a Mini Excavator?
Before AGT's mini excavators entered the market, renting often made more sense than buying due to the high purchase costs. But AGT has changed the game—you can now own a compact excavator at an incredibly affordable price.
Instead of paying high rental fees every time you start a small project, invest in your own AGT mini excavator and use it whenever you need it—no strings attached.
